New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation says
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation presents its first annual tribute to the connection between gospel music and the civil rights movement, with a special concert on Thursday, Jan. 14, at Dillard University's Lawless Memorial Chapel. Admission is free and no advance registration is required.

A program honoring the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., begins at 6:30 p.m. The musical performance begins at 7 p.m. and features a stellar lineup of New Orleans musicians.

This Jazz Journey gospel praise and worship concert features the some of the best gospel singers and choirs in the region. These include the Dillard University Choir, the Vision Quest Choir, Bishop Sean Elder and the Mount Herman Baptist Church Choir of Avondale, La. Also performing will be the Rev. Earnest Salisberry (Chaplain of Dillard University and Director Vision Quest), the 5 Boys of Ninevah, the recording artist Minister Eric Gable, Evangelist Jackie Tolbert, the singers Sylvia Branon and Consuella Lumas and the organist Melvin Winfield. A program honoring Dr. King begins at 6:30 p.m.; the concert starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free and no advance registration is required

Our series of events honoring the Martin Luther King holiday weekend continues on Friday, Jan. 15, with a free jazz concert, also at Dillard's Lawless Chapel, featuring the singers Mary Stallings and Charles Turner, and the saxophonist Ernie Watts.
