The event creator says
Steve Martin Fine Art is pleased to present Stratigraphics, new paintings and assemblage by New Orleans artist Brent Houzenga, through the month of November, 2015 with an opening reception to be held November 7 from 6 to 9 PM.

In 2006 artist Brent Houzenga's life was altered forever when he stumbled upon two photo albums from the 1890's in someone's trash. Houzenga has been painting these lost souls now for nearly a decade, bringing new life to these once discarded individuals through stenciled portraiture and his own unique action style painting techniques. Like his discarded subjects, Houzenga paints on discarded objects. Stratigraphics will feature Houzenga's signature techniques on glass and found wood.

Stratigraphics will showcase Houzenga's newest brightly colored iconic paintings alongside a number of upcycled and found object assemblages. Peeling away the layers of his work, the artist attempts to not let any part of his process go to waste. Some things you might expect to see: A large ball of masking tape accrued from over two years of painting, Paint covered razor blades, Remnants from his stencil making process, Spray cans as canvas, silkscreens cut up and realigned, and A LOT of things cast in resin.

While you're strolling Julia St look for part of another exhibition by Houzenga, Fossil Fueled: Calling All Cars, on the street. A massive fleet of Houzenga painted vehicles will be on view throughout the city throughout the day. The convoy will end at the Julia St art opening. (See Houzenga.com for locations and showtimes)

Stratigraphics will serve as a celebration of nearly a decade of painting and exhibiting for the artist, who has already proven to be volcanic. Houzenga earned his B.A. in printmaking from Western Illinois University in 2006 and will be completing his MFA at the University of New Orleans in 2017. Houzenga's art has graced the walls of some of the top galleries in Warsaw, Chicago, Kansas City, Washington D.C., Portland, Los Angeles, Austin, Miami, and New Orleans. His show "Fire Department" at the Dubuque Museum of Art in Dubuque, Iowa, was exhibited beside one of America’s most treasured artists, Grant Wood. In 2012 he was commissioned to paint a portrait for Matthew McConaughey's personal collection.

Houzenga's work has been featured in publications such as Time Out Chicago, Art and Art Galleries of the South, Art+Design New Orleans, as well as the Rizzoli book Stickers: From Punk Rock to Contemporary Art. He is the subject of the independent documentary film Brent Houzenga: Hybrid Pioneer.
