Halloween is for the children. And so, in the run-up to the costuming and candy-gathering festivities, when planning your month-long scary movie marathon, don’t ignore the little ones. If you’re looking for gentle scares that won’t have you washing wet pajamas every night, Disney+ has you covered. You might not link horror with Disney, but even their seemingly placid animated classics contain some unsettling moments. (Think ‘Pink Elephants on Parade’ from Dumbo, or the donkey transformations in Pinocchio.) Here, we’ve compiled 19 of the spookiest movies currently streaming on the platform. Don’t worry: true to the House of Mouse, they’re more fun than frightening overall.

Jack Skellington holds the honorable title of Pumpkin King. However, he's grown weary of his spooky responsiblities. When the thought of Halloween becomes too much to bare, he turns his attention toward Christmas, something he's never encountered before. What happens when he tries to give Kris Kringle a helping hand on December 24? Rated PG.

Young Miguel comes from a tight-knit, multigenerational Mexican household, with one major rule: no music. An unplanned trip to the land of the dead reveals why that is – and that it’s based on a lie only Miguel can set straight. Sure, all the skeletons are freaky at first, but this is really a beautiful, big-hearted film about how we keep the spirits of our lost loved ones alive. Rated PG.

An artifact of the time when kids movies were unafraid to dabble in light occult themes, this dark fantasy takes a kids-eye-view to the arrival of a strange carnival in small-town Illinois, run by a mysterious figure known as Mr Dark. Long unavailable for streaming in the United States, it magically appeared on Disney+ in October 2025, just in time for spooky season. Rated PG.

Before the long-awaited sequel hits the streamer at the end of September, get reacquainted with the Sanderson sisters, a trio of witches from the 1600s unleashed in modern-day Salem, Massachusetts, in this cult-classic Disney horror comedy. After spending 300 years in purgatory, the coven – memorably portrayed by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy – are accidentally brought back to life by a local teenager, who has until sundown to send them back to the netherworld from whence they came. Hold on to your flying vacuums – it’s a wild ride! Rated PG.

Young Victor relies heavily on companionship from his pup, Sparky. But, sadly, fate had other plans for the cute canine. But it just so happens that Victor has a love of science and uses that passion to bring Sparky back to life. What will happen when everyone else catches on that he is able to bring deceased animals back to life? (Hint: Nothing good.) Rated PG.

Monsters are, by definition, pretty scary, but as this Pixar classic shows, scaring is just what they do for work. Mike and Scully are big-shots down at the fear factory, where children’s screams are harvested for energy. But when a precocious tot gets loose in their world, it upends everything they’ve been taught about humankind — and themselves. Rated G.

7. Halloweentown (1998)

Marnie Piper (Kimberly J. Brown) is toughing it out in a household that can’t stand Halloween, but little does she know she’ll soon be living out every tween’s dream: She’s actually a witch and has magical powers. After overhearing a conversation between her mother and grandmother, Marnie sets off to see for herself if Halloweentown is real—and boy is it ever! But remember that whole “with great power comes great responsibility” thing? It’s the truth, and Marnie (alongside her brother and little sister) encounters more trouble than she bargained for. Rated TV-PG.

8. Zombies (2018)

A school-integration parable involving singing zombies? Uh, sure! In this mix of High School Musical and Twilight, the students of Zombietown, deemed no longer a threat to humans, are transferred to neighbouring Seabrook High. Tensions naturally run high, complicating the budding romance between an undead quarterback and a living cheerleader. Subsequent sequels have added werewolves, aliens and vampires, all espousing a pro-tolerance message, which can’t be discounted these days. Rated TV-G.

Jim Evers didn't mean to bring his work on vacation with him. It just sort of happened! When the realtor plans to take his family on vacation, he is asked to stop at a creepy-looking home he's to sell. The visit becomes a debacle when he realizes the humble abode is haunted and the spirits need his help. Rated PG.

Boomers grew up watching Judy Garland galavant through a land of Technicolor whimsy with her fabulous fairy-tale friends. Eighties kids got this acid nightmare. Set shortly after the events of the original Oz, the sorta-sequel follows Dorothy back over the rainbow, where she finds the kingdom reduced to rubble and overrun with truly terrifying creatures. Thought the flying monkeys were scary? Wait until you see the Wheelers. Rated PG.

11. Twitches (2005)

In true Tia and Tamera Mowry fashion, the real-life twins play separated twins at birth—this time, with a few magical elements mixed in. When they retunite in the film, the sisters realize their powers are actually stronger when they join forces. Oh, the possibilities! Rated TV-PG.

12. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)

Washington Irving's grisly tale of Sleepy Hollow becomes more palatable for the kiddies in this cartoon, the second of two featurettes. Following The Wind in the Willows adaptation is this story of bumptious schoolmaster Ichabod Crane and his nemesis the Headless Horseman. It's a trite, chocolate-box picture of colonial days—until the Horseman shows up for one of those nightmare sequences with which Uncle Walt so relished. He sure liked to terrify his young audiences. Rated G.

13. Mr Boogedy (1986)

Need a horror gateway for your burgeoning spookster? One of Disney’s many, many Halloween-themed TV movies, this ghost story involves a family (including David Faustino, aka Bud Bundy) battling a boil-faced evil spirit who’s something like a safe-and-sane Freddy Krueger. The story is fairly generic, but the villain is memorable enough to stay in your kid’s nightmares until they’re old enough to meet the real Freddy.

Did Stephen Sondheim invent the multiverse? Certainly not, but he did open one with his 1987 musical. In Disney’s adaptation, Emily Blunt and James Corden venture into the deep, dark forest in search of a cure for a witch’s curse, bringing them into contact with the likes of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and other classic Grimm brothers characters. Meryl Streep is fantastic as the witch, natch.

15. Mom's Got a Date with a Vampire (2000)

The Hansen kids aren't going to let the fact that they're grounded stop them from their plans. So, in hopes to sidetrack their mom, they're willing to do anything...even if that means setting her up with an eligible vampire. Rated TV-PG.

16. Under Wraps 2 (2022)

What fun-loving group of tweens hasn’t want to befriend their own ancient mummy and try to keep it from the clutches of a band of criminals? Certainly none that we know. This boisterous good time of a Halloween flick – The Mummy for sugar fiends – is firmly in the tradition of Disney kids’ movies where the wee’uns stand up to baddies to protect a vulnerable friend. This one just happens to be several thousands of years old.

17. Can of Worms (1999)

Careful what you wish for! One teen is so over life on earth that he sends out a call to the cosmos to save him. But, he's definitely not prepared when aliens actually show up. Rated PG.

18. Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)

The Sanderson sisters – Winnie (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mary (Kathy Najimy) – are back in Salem a full 30 years on from the original Hocus Pocus, and just as flamboyantly shameless as ever. But this long-awaited sequel confronts the ancient sorcesses with an immeasurably more powerful force: three sassy high-schoolers. It’s fun for all the family and the songs – especially the Elton John-written ‘The Witches Are Back’ – will be rattling around your house for days.

19. Spooky Buddies (2011)

When an evil warlock puts an entire town under his spell, it’s up to five talkative canines, their child owners and Ron Howard’s dad to stop him, before it’s too late. Puppies, Halloween and a very young Skyler Gisondo in a role he’s probably hoping no one discovers? What’s not to love? Rated G.
