Michaela Coel, The Crown’s Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Tobias Menzies and Peter Morgan, and the cast of smash-hit comedy Ted Lasso were some of the local winners at last night’s Emmys awards in Los Angeles.

On a gala night for Londoners, Coel picked up an Emmy for Best Writing in a Television Limited Series or Movie for her remarkable 12-part BBC drama I May Destroy You, while Morgan won his first Emmy for The Crown – for Outstanding Drama Series and Best Writing for a Drama Series – and O’Connor and Colman won Best Actor and Best Actress in a Drama for their portrayals of Prince Charles and the Queen respectively. Menzies won Best Supporting Actor for playing Prince Philip.

Sutton boy Brett Goldstein won Best Supporting Actor for his depiction of sweary ex-footballer Roy Kent in Apple TV+’s Ted LassoHis speech was right out of the Roy Kent handbook too: ‘I was very, very specifically told I’m not allowed to swear,’ he said, ‘So this speech is gonna be fucking short.’

Fellow Londoner Hannah Waddingham also won a Best Supporting gong for her role as Richmond FC’s secret-softie owner Rebecca Welton.

Those were just two of Ted Lasso’s seven Emmy wins, which also included Outstanding Comedy Show, pipping Black-ish and Pen15 to the award. Jason Sudeikis won Best Actor in a Comedy for playing the golden-hearted coach himself.

Kate Winslet won Best Actress for Mare of Easttown, while Gillian Anderson picked up her first Emmy since her 1997 win for The X-Files for her depiction of Margaret Thatcher in The Crown.
