International travel may be opening back up again, but things are a little different. For one thing, we’re really into personal space. Who wants to stay in a poky hotel room when you could have your own private pool terrace? Or, even better, a 50-acre private island in the dreamy lagoon that surrounds Venice?
The island of Valle Falconera lies just off Cavallino-Treporti, a boat ride away from Venice itself – and you can rent it exclusively on Airbnb, with plenty of available dates throughout the rest of 2020 and beyond.
Accommodation consists of a traditional pink farmhouse, with six bedrooms sleeping up to 16 guests. Elsewhere on the island you’ll find fish farms, chickens, beehives, vines, pear and fig trees, reports Il Gazzettino, and sometimes even exotic birds like kingfishers, bee-eaters and flamingos.
Your hosts are sisters Martina and Anna Sarzetto, who inherited the island from their grandfather and have devoted themselves to cultivating it – which, luckily for you, includes welcoming visitors.
You should know that if you’re just looking for quick access to Saint Mark’s Square and the Rialto, this probably isn’t the one (for some more convenient picks, check out our list of the best Airbnbs in Venice). But that’s counterbalanced by an incredible price for so much space to call your own.
For one or two guests, prices start at €87 (£78, $104, A$143) per night. Bring a group of 16, and you’ll pay €577 per night – that’s only €36 (£33, $43, A$59) per person. And that, as the Italians would say, ‘è un vero affare’ – particularly if 2020 has got you more willing to embrace slow tourism and the wonders of nature in one of the most beautiful spots in Europe.
