🆕 What’s new on Netflix in October 2025
1. The Naked Gun (Paramount+)
Who knew it was even legal to remake a sacred comedic text like 1988’s The Naked Gun, let alone make it good, but the Liam Neeson-starring reboot of Zucker, Abrams and Zucker’s splatter-joke classic doesn’t just succeed beyond the initial low expectations – it’s the funniest movie of the year. Maybe we should’ve seen it coming: after all, director Akiva Schaffer went in with one modern-classic spoof to his name already. Read our review.

2. The Lost Bus (Apple TV+)
A throwback to ’90s disaster movies, only rendered in director Paul Greengrass’s signature docudrama style, this survival thriller dramatises a true act of heroism, with Matthew McConaughey as a school bus driver who rescued 22 children and their teacher (played by America Ferrera) during a massive wildfire in Northern California in 2018. It’ll make you sweat, and not just because of the flames.

3. How to Train Your Dragon (Peacock)
A live-action How to Train Your Dragon where the dragons are still computer animated feels like a blown opportunity for cool practical effects, but the young target audience clearly didn’t mind: it’s the fifth highest-grossing film of the year worldwide so far. Other than the flesh-and-blood humans, much about the movie remains the same: Mason Thames (The Black Phone) is Hiccup, a young Viking who must convince his clan that the scaly beasts need not be feared.

4. Honey Don’t! (Peacock)
The separation of the Coen brothers hasn’t exactly produced a slew of classics – in Ethan’s case, his two projects since the breakup rise to ‘pleasant distractions’ at best. But hey, we all need 90-minute distractions these days. In this one – co-written, like 2024’s Drive-Away Dolls, with his partner, Tricia Cooke – Margaret Qualley is a gumshoe straight out of Raymond Chandler investigating a string of murders seemingly connected to a church run by a shady evangelist, played with gusto by Chris Evans. 5. The Substance (HBO Max)
Still haven’t found the stomach to watch Coralie Fargeat’s mega-gross body-horror fantasia? Well, you’re running out of excuses. Now that it’s finally expanding off Mubi, any remaining holdouts should chug some Pepto-Bismol and get to streaming – it’s the most vicious, in-your-face, down-your-throat satire of the decade, and almost certainly the most disgusting movie ever nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.
