France has around 5,500 km of coastline, and along that, whether it’s a party stretch in Saint-Tropez or secluded spots in Bordeaux, there are some really lovely beaches – we’ve compiled a list of our 10 favourites here

However, some insightful new research has just been conducted by cruise operator DFDS, which analysed more than 5,000 Google reviews and searched for keywords such as ‘clear water’, ‘tranquil’ and ‘picturesque’, to provide a handy list of lovely beaches, many of which are lesser-known.

Topping this roundup and claiming the crown as France’s most gorgeous beach? That would be Cap Blanc-Nez, a sandy stretch of coast in Calais, backdropped by rugged chalk cliffs and boasting crystal-clear water. The beach scored an impressive 90.2 out of 100.

The top three was rounded out by Grand Crohot, a wild, sand-dune surrounded beach in Bordeaux, and Riva Bella, which sits on the northern coast of Normandy and offers a peaceful alternative from more famous nearby beaches.

Not every inclusion is a tranquil little hideaway – at number eight is Pampelonne Beach, characterised by ‘beach clubs, beautiful white sand and boho vibes’ and one of Time Out’s favourite beaches in France.
