These days, Netflix is killing it with original programming, from the well-received return of Stranger Things to Cannes-approved movies by Noah Baumbach and Snowpiercer’s Bong Joon-ho. They’re even producing the next Martin Scorsese movie, The Irishman, starring much of the cast from Goodfellas. That said, Netflix’s rotating monthly selection has some of the best movie options, mixed in among their huge catalog. Let us do the work for you. We’ve found five essentially American movies—Oscar winners and cornerstones of culture. So fire up that thumb. There’s viewing to do.

Best new movies on Netflix

Apollo 13 (1995)
  • Movies
  • Drama

Ron Howard’s most entertaining movie, about the heroic 1970 rescue of the troubled lunar mission, succeeds despite its director’s usual indulgences, here of Tom Hanks and Bill Paxton. When the proceedings focus on ground-based techies spinning innovations out of nothing, though, it’s beyond inspiring.

Batman (1989)
  • Movies

You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight? The Joker knows you have, and don’t think some guy who dresses up as a bat is gonna get all of his press. Back in 1989, Tim Burton’s behemoth was the epitome of cool, boasting fabulous production design (at least the stuff that doesn’t get chewed up by Jack Nicholson).

Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
  • Movies
  • Drama

The many shades of the McConaissance are on display in this one-stop shop of the actor’s fluidity. He starts off desperate and rascally, hopping rodeo fences to escape gambling debts. Then, some disheartening medical news provokes a scruffy rage explosion: tangy, furious and whip-smart.

The Godfather Part II (1974)
  • Movies
  • Drama

When superfans speak of the superiority of this sequel, it’s not to be contrary. Francis Ford Coppola took Mario Puzo’s pulp novel and darkened it with Nixonian paranoia and the power of political back rooms. Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone is a signature creation of the ’70s: the richest descent cinema has to offer.

The Truman Show (1998)
  • Movies
  • Fantasy

The film now seems deeply prophetic: Our hero (Jim Carrey) lives an innocuous suburban life, completely unaware that millions of TV viewers are tuning in to his every cough and complaint. All this is lacking, really, is a Kardashian.
