The best new movies on Netflix in November

Netflix serves up a bountiful harvest of Americana—stirring and heartbreaking—in this month of Thanksgiving

By Joshua Rothkopf and Time Out contributors

These days, Netflix is killing it with original programming—from the hugely anticipated return of Stranger Things to Cannes-approved movies by Noah Baumbach and Snowpiercer’s Bong Joon-ho. They’re even producing the next Martin Scorsese movie, The Irishman, starring much of the cast from Goodfellas. That said, Netflix’s rotating monthly selection has some of the best movie options, mixed in among their huge catalog. Let us do the work for you. We’ve found five excellent movies about America—from baseball heroes and legal eagles to a classic story about a farm girl and a spider. So fire up that thumb. There’s viewing to do.

Best new movies on Netflix

Charlotte’s Web (2006)

Movies Drama

Add to the din of wiseacre animal movies a small, soft voice of reason. A refreshing children’s entertainment bereft of cutesy pop-culture references and true to the letter and spirit of E.B. White’s 1952 classic, this more recent live action-animated version succeeds against all expectations.

Field of Dreams (1989)

Grown men have been known to weep like babies at the finale of this paean to baseball, apple pie and father issues. “If you build it, they will come.” Okay, fine, we’ll build it already! Kevin Costner, a natural in sports movies, acquits himself nicely as a baseball-obsessed DIY-er who turns his backyard into a diamond.

42 (2013)

Movies Drama

Jackie Robinson’s story is so blue-sky heroic and transcendent, it becomes hard for any filmmaker to run the bases without falling into emotional goo. Writer-director Brian Helgeland has somehow found a way to do it, cleanly and intelligently, by foregrounding a revelatory performance by Chadwick Boseman.

Michael Clayton (2007)

Movies Drama

Solemnly titled in the manner of great ’70s crusader movies like Serpico, this legal drama stars George Clooney as a private card shark and lapsed attorney. The beauty of this rich, wrinkly movie—which ends on an unbroken close-up, the peak of Clooney’s art—is that we never completely understand the guy’s pain.

Mudbound (2017)

Movies Drama

The collected Sundance press flipped out and immediately went to DEFCON Oscar after this film's first screening in January. But in the cold light of day, Dee Rees's post-WWII drama is a touch more literary than sensational. The film's interracial weave, however, is often glorious—it’s a film that grows in the mind.
