Bria Skonberg says
A specialist in classic American jazz, Bria Skonberg expands the vocabulary and traditions of Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet with worldly rhythms and modern jazz variance. She calls her music Hot Jazz. Born in British Columbia, the young trumpeter moved to New York City in 2010 and is now at the forefront of a new wave of traditional jazz revival. Her U.S. debut album, So Is the Day, peaked at number seven on the U.S. national jazz charts and featured original compositions and New Orleans–inspired stylistic fusions.

Skonberg brings a vibrant new energy to these historic melodies, which their composers would most likely have embraced. She is a triple-threat artist, excelling as a trumpeter, jazz vocalist, and composer. Her original music easily fits into what we expect of Trad, or traditional jazz, but with a contemporary flair. Close your eyes while listening to her music and it is not difficult to imagine that Satchmo is playing right alongside.

Among numerous awards Skonberg has received are Jazz at Lincoln Center’s “Swing! Award” (2015), New York’s Bistro Award for outstanding jazz artist (2014), and Hot House jazz magazine’s top awards for Female Vocalist and Trumpeter (2014 and 2015). She was named DownBeat magazine’s “Rising Star” (2013 and 2014) and nominated for the Jazz Journalists Association’s “Up and Coming Artist” award (2013). Skonberg is also an educator, having cofounded and served as codirector of the New York Hot Jazz Camp. In 2012, she cofounded the New York Hot Jazz Festival and continues to coproduce the annual event. Skonberg is a Bach Trumpet / Conn-Selmer Artist.
