One of the biggest challenges facing every would-be improviser is knowing how and what to practice. This includes knowing which approaches to the study of melody, rhythm and harmony will assist in transferring what is learned in the practice room into free-flowing musical performance in different contexts.
In addition to clarifying "what" to practice, this workshop will focus on developing the techniques for starting from an identified idea or concept, and moving it forward into unknown musical territory. Simply stated, this means playing with one's full sound, and generating ideas or shapes into musical lines over a form or in a free-play setting. Through application of these methods, participants will learn the skills needed to develop "something" from "nothing" in the heat of the musical performance.
In this workshop you will learn:
Creative approaches to sculpting interesting lines and melodies
Ways to practice and increase rhythmic vocabulary
Ideas for going deeper into one's study
Ways that are helpful for getting into the zone
