For the Proper Protection of the Frontier: The National Guard Call-Up on the Mexican Border in 1916

Join speaker and Curator of History, Jared Smith, as he discusses "The Great Call-Up" of 1916. Over 150,000 National Guard troops were called to service along the U.S./Mexico border, making it one of the largest peacetime mobilizations of American troops in U.S. history. While the training and lessons learned from this challenging operation would not be utilized against Pancho Villa’s raiders or the Mexican Army, the Guardsmen found a need for their sharpened knowledge, skills and experience in the trenches of Europe soon thereafter.

Admission is free and open to the public.
