주말 오후의 이태원은 수많은 인파가 한데 뒤섞인 지난날의 명동을 떠오르게 한다. 해밀톤 호텔 뒷골목에서 발전한 상권은 우사단로와 경리단길을 지나 해방촌까지 이어지며, 반대쪽인 한강진역 부근도 편집숍 비이커, 현대카드 라이브러리를 중심으로 다양한 상점이 분포한다. 모두가 대로변 주변으로 뻗어나가는 숍에 관심을 가질 때, 한강진역 주변 낮은 지대의 골목길에도 크고 작은 변화가 일기 시작했다. 이태원에서 한강진역 방향으로 길을 걷다가 제일기획을 지나 차도에서 한 길 안쪽으로 들어서면 곽호빈 대표의 ‘테일러블’ 여성 매장까지 이어지는 짧은 내리막길이 나온다. 예전 ‘스티브제이앤요니피(Steve J&Yoni P)’의 매장이 위치하던 ‘대사관로 5길’과 ‘이태원로 54’길이 맞닿아 T자를 이루는 이곳이 바로 한남동의 새로운 골목길. 아직은 주말에도 앉을 자리가 남아 있는 이곳의 카페와 레스토랑은 사실 인스타그램에서 서울 아가씨들에게 가장 주목 받고 있는 ‘핫스팟’이 한 집 건너 한 집씩 위치한 곳이다. 작은 길에서 작게 시작한 브랜드가 모여 있는 이곳은 다행히도 메인 상권이 들어서기에는 좁은, 입지가 작은 골목이다. 개성 있는 가게들이 언제 또 인파에 잠식당할지 모르니 주말을 이용해 방문해보자.

성경책에서 영감을 받았다는 위험한(?) 콘셉트의 노트. 아트디렉터 권오현과 양선희 실장이 이끄는 그래픽 스튜디오 구트폼(Guteform)이 내놓은 첫 번째 프로덕트 라인이다. 검은색 커버는 물론, 금박으로 둘러싼 종이 테두리, 책갈피용 붉은색 끈까지 지구상에서 가장 오래된 책, 성경의 그 모습과 꼭 닮았다. 예상 가능한 우려와 달리 종교적인 이유로 이런 아이디어를 낸 것은 아니다. 성경이 현존하는 가장 오래된 책 중 하나라는 점과, 그 클래식한 외형 자체에서 영감을 받았다. 글씨체는 ‘Goudy Text MT’로 1454년에 인쇄된 구텐베르크의 42행 성서에 쓰인 서체를 디지털화해 사용했고, 속지는 원래 성경책에 쓰이는 박엽지보다 5그램 정도 두꺼운 종이를 사용했다. 전체 페이지 포맷은 125×202mm로 흔히 말하는 ‘황금비율(1:1.618)’을 따라 한 손으로 들기에 완벽하다. 이탈리아산 양가죽을 커버로 사용해 손에 감기는 느낌마저 남다른 이 고급스러운 노트가 끝까지 발칙한 이유? 각기 다른 3가지 커버 문구 중 원하는 것을 선택할 수 있게 한 점이다. ‘Hell yeah’, ‘Oh My God’, ‘Holy Shit’ 중 가장 인기 있는 제품은 노코멘트. 당신의 예상은? 온라인 판매처: http://storefarm.naver.com/guteform

‘방배동 카페 골목’이 한창 유행할 때가 있었다. 압구정 로데오 거리와 쌍벽을 이루며 오렌지족과 젊은 청춘들이 밤새워 놀던 곳이었다. 지금은 이름도 무색하게 잊혀진 그 카페 골목에서 멀지 않은 곳에 새로운 길이 뜨고 있다. 서래마을과 방배동 카페골목의 중간쯤에 숨어 있는 좁은 ‘사이길’이다. 좀 더 설명하자면, 방배동 함지박 사거리에서 서래초등학교까지 이어지는 대로에서 한길 안쪽으로 들어서면 된다. 개인 작업실과 소규모 갤러리가 모여 있던 이 조용한 길은 수공예 공방과 가게가 촘촘히 자리 잡은 좁은 길로 변모했다. 서울이 SPA 브랜드숍과 대형 프랜차이즈 카페에 열광하는 동안, 350m의 한가닥 길에 모인 예술가들은 삼삼오오 뜻을 모았다. 그렇게 ‘사이길예술거리조성회’가 이루어졌고, ‘사이 좋은’ 커뮤니티가 구축되었다. 2012년 5개의 매장으로 시작한 단체는, 현재 37개의 브랜드와 매장이 함께하고 있다. 매월 둘째 주 토요일에는 사이길의 매장과 외부에서 활동하는 작가들이 함께 모여 ‘사이데이 마켓’도 연다. 소규모 비즈니스와 골목 상권을 활성화하기 위한 아이디어였다. 사이길이 다른 상권과는 차별화되는 소박하고 따뜻한 분위기를 지닌 것은 이처럼 소규모로 운영되는 브랜드와 매장들이 튼튼한 지역 커뮤니티를 이루며 이타적인 발전을 추구하기 때문이다. 좋은 재료, 좋은 디자인, 좋은 사람만 생각하는 이들이 모여 정직한 창작물과 먹거리를 만드는 이곳에는 좁은 골목 사이사이에 소소한 정성이 깃들어 있다.

A fermata is a symbol that that tells the musician to prolong a note beyond its normal duration. Likewise, this store is growing slowly but surely. La fermata, a Hannam-dong fashion brand and lifestyle multi-shop, is owned by designer Choi Hye-jin and patternmaker Yoon Kwon-jin. You can get a whiff of Choi’s taste at work in the shop’s décor, but it's most tangible in the La Fermata dresses she designs herself. Her loose-fitting, oversized dresses cover your knees, don't cling to your body and have no zippers or buttons. Instead, you use laces, made with the same fabric as the dresses themselves, to adjust them. What's more, they're made from linen and cotton, so you can already imagine what a pleasure it is to wear them. Since they come in chromatic designs or pastel colors, the furrows and tassel decorations are not at all overwhelming. At La Fermata you'll also find shoe brands, such as Anne Thomas and Naguisa that are perfectly matched to the clothes, plus woven bags and a variety of lifestyle items. This men's shoe store offers a selection of foreign brands hard to find in Korea, including Edward Green, one of the U.K.'s most highly reputed footwear brands; Alden, maker of shoes from cordovan leather; and Paraboot, the only company to produce the soles of its own shoes. Back in 2008, Unipair introduced the concept of a men's select shoe shop for the first time in Korea. CEO Kang Jae-yeong, space chooses all the brands he sells, based on a comprehensive knowledge of shoe leather and hand-making processes. Since he imports shoes based on their craftsmanship and design in relation to their price, rather than simply hunting down the most expensive brands, you'll find a wide range of prices here. The broad selection stretches from more popular brands for those taking their first steps into the world of handmade footwear to premium products for veteran buyers. Resh, a Japanese specialist shoe repair shop, operates within Unipair. Staffed by employees trained at Resh HQ in Osaka, this is the place you can leave your shoes without worry. Anyone who's ever bemoaned the lack of handmade men's shoes in Korea needs to head here pronto. 

‘페르마타’는 악보에서 박자를 잠시 멈추거나 늘이는 기호를 말한다. 이렇게 천천히, 그렇지만 자기만의 속도로 차곡차곡 성장하고 있는 곳이 있다. 한남동의 패션 브랜드이자 라이프스타일 편집숍 페르마타. 디자이너 최혜진과 패턴메이커 윤권진 부부가 함께 운영하는 공간이다. 가게 곳곳에서 묻어나는 최혜진 대표의 취향은 특히 직접 디자인하는 ‘라 페르마타’의 원피스에서 제대로 드러난다. 무릎을 덮는 길이에 몸에 달라붙지 않는 낙낙한 오버사이즈의 드레스는 지퍼나 단추 대신 같은 원단을 사용한 끈으로 핏을 조절할 수 있다. 거기에 피부에 가장 편안한 리넨과 면을 소재로 사용하기 때문에 입어보지 않아도 얼마나 편안할지 짐작할 수 있을 정도. 톤 다운된 무채색이나 파스텔 색감 덕에 주름이나 태슬 디테일도 전혀 과하게 느껴지지 않는다. 입는 것만으로도 어딘가 여유롭고 한적한 자연을 떠올리게 하는 것이 페르마타 디자인의 특징. 이곳의 옷과 꼭 어울리는 앤토마스(Anne Thomas), 나귀사(Naguisa) 같은 유럽의 슈즈 브랜드와, 위빙 장식이 달린 가방, 다양한 리빙 소품 등도 함께 판매한다. 쇼룸을 통째로 옷장 삼고 싶어지는 곳, 디자이너의 부러운 라이프스타일까지 엿볼 수 있는 한남동의 작은 사랑방을 확인할 것.  

순수미술을 전공한 박미라 대표가 오픈한 플라워 스튜디오. 달리아, 베로니카, 스카비오사 등 계절에 따라 그때그때 바뀌는 이국적인 생김새의 꽃을 감각적으로 디자인한다. 특히 여러 가지 꽃과 소재가 섞인 미니 화분과 다양한 종류의 선인장은 인테리어 소품으로도 제격이다. 좀 더 특별한 선물을 원한다면 원데이 클레스를 예약한 뒤 직접 꽃바구니를 제작할 수 있다.     

If you can custom-make a tailored suit for more formal occasions, why not get a pair of custom-made tailored jeans for the everyday? At Hur Jung-un's Bespoke Denim, you can do just that. Unlike several shops that use ready-made patterns to make "custom tailor" clothes, this store custom-designs a pair of jeans so that it will perfectly fit the person's body shape. Hur Jung-un explained how his store got its start: "I simply loved clothes when I was young, and then I started thinking that I wanted to make clothes for myself. I did my research and started making clothes, and when that happened, I started getting orders from those who admired my jeans." He imports materials directly from leaders in the jean industry, such as Japan, Turkey, and the U.S., which are reputed for good denim and highly advanced dyeing techniques. A customer who visits his shop picks the type of denim fabric that she or he likes, is measured, and discusses designs. Once the design is roughly decided upon, the customer can choose every detail of the product, including buttons, zippers and even the color of the threads. After basting is done, (for a perfect fit, they use denim instead of cotton cloth) the customer finalizes the details for the end product. One pair of jeans involves three trips to the store and costs quite the pretty penny, but it might be worth it to create the jeans of your dreams. 정장을 맞추듯 청바지를 취향과 체형에 따라 맞춤 제작할 수 있는 곳이 있다. 한 명의 디자이너가 모든 과정을 책임지는 원서동의 ‘허정운 비스포크(bespoke) 데님’. 미리 만들어놓은 패턴을 수정해 말만 ‘맞춤복’을 제작하는 몇몇 숍과 달리 100% 주문자의 신체에 맞춘, 딱 한 명만을 위한 청바지를 디자인한다. 대형 체인 브랜드의 매장이 장악한 서울에서 ‘맞춤 청바지’라는 까다로운 아이템을 시작한 이유는 뭘까? “어릴 땐 마냥 옷이 좋았는데 점점 내가 입을 옷을 직접 만들어야겠다는 생각에 청바지를 만들기 시작했어요. 계속 연구하면서 만들다 보니 주변에서 입소문을 타기 시작했고 작년에 작업실 겸 매장을 오픈했죠.” 허정운 대표는 데님 원단과 염색기술이 훨씬 발달한 ‘청바지 선진국’ 일본과 터키, 미국 등을 돌며 직접 재료를 수입한다. 숍을 방문한 손님은 생지 원단 중 마음에 드는 종류를 고른 뒤 신체 사이즈를 재고 디자인을 의논한다. 어느 정도 모델이 잡히면 단추나 지퍼, 실의 색까지 청바지에 들어가는 모든 디테일을 본인의 취향에 따라 결정할 수 있다고. 가봉이 나오면(이곳에서는 정확한 핏을 위해 가봉에도 광목 대신 데님 원단을 사용한다), 다시 숍을 방문해 수정 사항을 체크하고 마지막으로 완성될 청바지를 기다리면 된다. 총 세 번의 방문이 필요하고 62만원이라는 가격도 만만치 않지만, 유행을 타지 않고 내 몸에 꼭 맞는 청바지를 구매할 수 있다는 게 큰 매력이다. 작년 1월에 오픈한 뒤 올해 2월, 1년 만에 신세계백화점 강남점에 2호점을 오픈했다.

The parent company of this brand, Bio M, is owned by a podiatrist. Employing the technologies developed by Bio M, grds uses special soles made by an Italian master for their shoes. The bottoms of their shoes are curved in order to make walking feel natural and comfortable. As much as they focus on the basic functions of their shoes, their design is also stylish. Once you try on their sneakers, you will probably go home with a new pair of shoes in your hand.

This is a handmade shoe brand launched by Yoon Hong-mi, who used to work as a shoe designer at HANSOME. Reike nen’s shoes are simple and soft, without any flashy decorations or showy colors, making it easier for you to match them with any outfit. Because they make heels appropriate to the shoes’ design and let you choose different options according to the shape of your feet, their products are more than pretty; they are comfortable. Their popular, lightweight loafers and basic Chelsea boots feature heels stuffed with spongy materials, and customers love them so much that they revisit Reike nen’s show room multiple times to replace their heels.

Think about the shape of a beoseon (traditional Korean socks) and you'll get an inkling of what Flat Apartment's designs look like. The shape of their shoes' toes resembles that of a beoseon but details vary. They release products in black and white almost every season, letting you choose timeless, classy items. You can also place a special order to buy products that were released this season, the last or the one before.

From pumps with slant heels covered in studs to Mary Jane-styled loafers with straps as thick as a waistband, nothing about YUUL YIE is ordinary—including the shape of the shoes' toes and heels and materials used. This season, you can browse for loafers and flats in a variety of colors, such as silver, pink, brown and more, with water drop-inspired pendants attached on them.

Courri is a women’s wear brand that sells minimal outfits with accented details at a reasonable price. Here, you can find basic fashion items, such as perfectly tailored shirts or H-line skirts, with unique twists to them. CEO Hwang Yoo-na studied fine arts in New York and built her career working for brands like Phillip Lim and Alexander Wang, mainly dealing with their online businesses. In 2014, she returned to Seoul, and after six months of planning for a brand that sells Korean clothes to customers overseas, she launched her very own brand instead. She explained: "I went around Dongdaemun doing market research and taking some test cuts. But in the end I came to the conclusion that the quality they offered was not satisfying enough. That's how I got to thinking that maybe I should make a Korean brand that could be sold abroad as well." Thanks to her past career in online retailing, she decided to start with direct sales from the get-go and started out by selling her products online. Our favorite item? Their silk and linen skirt that falls right below your knees.

Barista at Naeilcoffee in Daehangno How’d you end up in Korea?I was born in Africa, and I didn't come to Korea because I particularly liked the country, but because I didn't  have many options back then. Come to think of it, I am thankful. With the help of Refuge pNan, which helps  refugees like me settle into Korea, I received training to become a barista. At the church that I go to, I met the owner of Naeilcoffee and became the third African barista to work at the coffee shop. Were you already familiar with coffee culture?When I first came to Korea in 2013, I was pregnant with my daughter and I thought that I should do whatever I could as soon as the baby was born. I can't tell you exactly where I am from due to personal reasons, but it's one of the countries that exports the best coffee beans in Africa. But people living in Africa don't drink  coffee like Seoulites do. Because they mostly export good coffee beans, people often drink low quality coffee. And because it used to be under British rule, tea culture is more developed than that of coffee. How is Seoul different from where you grew up?There is no subway system where I grew up. Public transportation here is very convenient and highly developed. And in [where I’m from in] Africa, families are at the center of communities, but people living in Seoul are somewhat more individualistic. 대학로, ‘내일의 커피’ 바리스타   서울에 사는 아프리칸 바리스타라니 흔치 않은 캐릭터예요.네, 저는 아프리카에서 태어났어요. 한국을 좋아해서 왔다기보다, 당시에는 선택할 수 있는 다른 옵션이 없었어요. 지금 생각하면 감사한 일이지만요. 저 같은 난민들이 한국에 정착할 수 있도록 돕는 ‘피난처’라는 기관에서 도움을 받아 바리스타 교육을 받기 시작했어요. 그러다 지금 다니고 있는 교회에서 ‘내일의 커피’ 사장님을 만났고, 이 커피숍에서 일하는 세 번째 아프리칸 바리스타가 되었죠. 처음엔 아프리카에서 교육을 받은 바리스타인 줄 알았거든요.딸아이를 임신한 채 2013년쯤 한국으로 왔고, 아이가 태어나자마자 뭐라도 해야겠다는 생각이 들었어요. 사정상 제가 태어난 곳을 정확하게 밝힐 순 없지만, 아프리카에서 가장 좋은 커피콩을 수출하는 나라 중 하나예요. 하지만 아프리카 사람들은 서울 사람처럼 커피를 잘 마시지 않아요. 좋은 커피콩은 모두 해외로 수출하기 때문에, 질 낮은 커피를 먹는 경우가 많죠. 영국의 지배를 받은 곳이라 커피보다는 차 문화가 더 발달하기도 했고요. 언젠가 고향으로 돌아가면 사람들에게 진짜 맛있는 커피 맛을 알려주고 싶어요. 또 커피를 만든다는 게 고향의 문화를 알린다는 생각이 들기도 합니다. 서울은 모나 씨가 자란 곳과 어떻게 다른가요?제가 자란 곳은 지하철이 아예 없어요. 서울은 교통수단이 아주 편리하고, 훨씬 발전되어 있죠. 또, 아프리카는 가족 중심으로 공동체 생활을 하는 데 비해 서울 사람들은 좀 더 개인적이랄까? 어떨 땐 눈도 마주치기 싫어하는 것 같아요.(웃음) 아, 음식도 달라요! 제가 자란 곳에서는 소고기 바비큐가 가장 흔한 음식인데, 서울에서는 아주 비싸더라고요. 고향으로 돌아갈 계획이 있나요?사람들은 난민이 일자리를 뺏고 다른 나라에 정착하고 싶어 한다고 생각하지만 현실은 달라요. 고향의 상황이 안정되면 모두들 돌아가고 싶은 마음이 간절하죠. 제 꿈 중 하나는 아프리카에 돌아가 바리스타 학교를 세우는 거예요. 사람들이 힘들게 농사 지은 커피를 해외로 수출만 하지 않고 그곳에서 즐길 수 있도록 돕고 싶어요. 제가 서울에서 배운 것처럼 좋은 커피를 직접 만드는 법을 알려주고 싶기도 하고요.

20-30대 한국남녀 1000명에게 물었다. 지금까지 성관계를 가진 파트너 수, 평소 성관계 횟수, 자위방법, 새로운 성적 경험 시도까지. 한국 콘돔브랜드인 바른생각(damngoodidea.com)과 오픈서베이, 사단법인 푸른아우성이 함께 만든 2015년 통계 조사를 토대로 했다. 당신이 알고 싶은 우리 모두의 섹스에 관한 통계 조사.                                            

밀레니얼(millennials)은 1980년대 초반부터 2000년대 초반까지 출생한 세대를 말한다.디지털 환경에 능숙하고 지역사회와 정치에 관심이 많으며, 전 세대보다 훨씬 개방적인 사고를 가진 밀레니얼들. 앞으로 사회의 주역이 되는 한국 밀레니얼 세대는 무엇이 다른가.                      

 신림동 김보미(서울대학교 총학생회장)   커밍아웃과 학생회장 당선으로 많은 주목을 받고 있다. 사적인 이야기가 갑자기 뉴스에 오르는데 기분이 어떤지? 악플을 보면 유쾌하지는 않다. 그래도 최대한 덤덤하게 넘기려고 한다. 다만, 자극적인 기사 때문에 부모님이 걱정하시는 것은 옆에서 지켜보기 힘들다. 엄마는 아직도 인터뷰하지 말라고 하신다.   그럼에도 불구하고 많은 인터뷰를 했다.  (웃음) 많이 했다. 이 인터뷰가 끝나면 또 하나가 있다. 언론에 목소리를 내는 것 자체가 동성애자 커뮤니티에 도움이 된다고 생각한다. 너무 자극적인 내용이 아닌 이상은 인터뷰에 응하는 편이다.   이렇게까지 이슈가 되는 것 자체가, 우리나라가 성 소수자들에게 불평등한 사회라는 것의 반증일 수 있다. 동의한다. 커밍아웃을 하면서 ‘별일이 아니길 바란다’고 했지만 결국 별일이 됐다. 아직도 ‘굳이 왜 드러내냐’고 묻는 사람도 많다. 커밍아웃을 함으로써 당장 내가 겪어야 하는 차별과 무시가 존재하더라도, 그 뒤에 오는 긍정적인 변화에 일조할 수 있다면 만족한다.   스스로 인정하고 커밍아웃하기까지, 선택이  어렵지는 않았나? 대학에 들어오고 22살에 QIS(서울대학교 내 성 소수자 동아리)에 가입했다. 내겐 자기 긍정이 본격적으로 시작된 시기다. ‘언젠가는 커밍아웃을 꼭 해야지’ 다짐했고, 시기가 좀 앞당겨진 것뿐이다. 가족에게는 미안하지만 후회는 하지 않는다. 새해가 지나면 곧 명절인데, 가족이 많이 모이는 시기다.  커밍아웃을 한 뒤 첫 명절이라 솔직히 좀 부담스러운 마음도 있다. 안 갈까도 했지만, 사촌동생이 옆에 있어줄 테니까 꼭 오라고 했다. 그래서 갈 예정이다. 글 황혜영
