July is one of the best times to be in San Diego. The gray, gloomy clouds (actually a thick marine layer) present throughout May and June have finally dissipated, but the summer temps usually haven't spiked yet. There's good reason this is peak tourist season in America's Finest City as out-of-towners descend upon the city's beaches and numerous things to do outside

San Diego also has one of the largest concentrations of U.S. Navy personnel in the world and is home to the Navy's Pacific Fleet, making it an extremely patriotic city year-round, but especially on the 4th of July. Red, white and blue are always in season here, particularly near the military bases located in Coronado, Point Loma, Miramar, Oceanside and beyond.

Perhaps best of all, San Diego is home to California's largest fireworks show, known as the Big Bay Boom. While it can be seen from several parts of the city, the show is only one of many taking place throughout San Diego County to mark the holiday. In addition to fireworks this weekend, you can have fun at an Independence Day parade, theh San Diego County Fair, an MLB baseball game, and a pop-up social club. Don your loudest stars and stripes-themed outfit and plan your perfect 4th of July with family and friendsfrom sunrise to sunsetwith our detailed guide below. Happy Birthday, America!

4th of July in San Diego

Watch California's largest fireworks show overlooking San Diego Bay during the annual Big Bay Boom. Beginning at 9pm (so it's plenty dark outside), fireworks are launched from four barges in the bay, which can be seen from many miles away. Don't be surprised to see lawnchairs and tailgates set up for viewing parties starting early in the morning. Tune in to radio station 101.5 KGB for accompanying Americana music. The best vantage points are Shelter Island, Harbor Island, Coronado Ferry Landing, along the Embarcadero or in the Marina District downtown. Of course watching them from a boat in the harbor isn't too shabby either.

San Diego is a Navy town, so it's only fitting that Coronado (home to two large Navy bases and a large number of servicemembers and veterans) throws the largest Independence Day parade in town. Beginning at 10am on July 3, a very patriotic parade will run down Orange Avenue  Coronado's main thoroughfare. But make no mistake, Coronado residents and San Diego locals begin marking their spot along the parade route with chairs and tents much earlier  typically before sunrise. Also in Coronado, the Navy's parachute team known as The Leap Frogs will perform a demonstration in the sky at 2pm on July 4th.

July 4th is the last day to get your fix of funnel cakes and Ferris wheels at the San Diego County Fair. As such, the month-long event always goes out with a bang on Independence Day. Held at Del Mar Fairgrounds, guests can expect live music, patriotic celebrations and fireworks starting at 9pm. Admission tickets and parking passes are being sold in advance (only online) this year, so don't delay.

What's more American than a baseball game? Petco Park stadium is located in the heart of downtown, home to the San Diego Padres MLB team. Here you'll find craft beer, hot dogs, Cracker Jack and plenty of opportunities to sing Take Me Out to the Ball Game. On July 5, you can see the Padres take on the Washington Nationals at home beginning at 7:10pm. Count us in for America's favorite pastime and the seventh-inning stretch.

Celebrate America's birthday in style at Del Mar Social Club, held at Fairmont Grand Del Mar resort. This new pop-up opens just in time for the holiday weekend, inviting locals and guests to play upscale lawn games, sip on Aperol Spritz cocktails, enjoy live music and nosh on wood-fired eats. Mix and mingle with friends, and catch a fireworks show on July 3rd at 9pm. For seated service, reserve a fire pit or cabana. Reservations are required.

San Diego is known for having some of the most beautiful beaches in the country and 4th of July weekend brings the largest beach crowds seen all year, with thousands flocking to the coast for sun and sand. With that comes some of the worst traffic. Arrive early for any chance of finding a parking spot, or pay the requisite $20-$30 to locals renting out their driveway for the weekend. Once you hit the sand it'll all be worth it.
