5 out of 5 stars

A funky boutique that’s ideally situated for those looking to see the sights in San Francisco

Proper Hotel is a place full of eye-catching design, starting with the building in which it sits: a gorgeous flatiron that pokes its nose into Market Street like the bow of a ship. Inside, the rooms are cosy but stylishly fitted out, with plush gray furniture, plenty of marble in the bathroom and patterned wallpaper that treads a fine line between being jazzy and a little too ostentatious. But that’s forgivable in a place that clearly puts a lot of thought into the little details that make a hotel stay special, from Aesop toiletries to a mini-bar stocked with craft beer to free-to-hire bicycles if you fancy taking on the Golden Gate Bridge.

Neighborhood:
Situated in the heart of Mid-Market, a neighborhood that has undergone a huge amount of redevelopment in recent years, Proper Hotel’s location is super convenient for those looking to explore some of the city’s key sights such as the Ferry Building. It’s also close to a smattering of excellent galleries, and for the tech nerds among you it’s just a couple of blocks away from Twitter HQ.

Nearby:
1. Sightglass Coffee: For a brew from one of the third-wave coffee scene’s leading lights.
2. Mikkeller Bar: For some of the best beers on the planet.
3. Asian Art Museum: For gawping at the largest collection of its kind in the country.

Time Out tip:
Catch sunset from Charmaine’s, the hotel’s rooftop bar, which serves a mean spin on an Old Fashioned.
