Built by Dutugemunu during his reign (161-137 BC), the Viharaya belongs to the Maha Viharaya complex. The stupa has been reconstructed many times, with the most recent being in the 1990s; presenting a stupa which is of 59 metres in height and 43 metres in diameter. King Dutugemunu built the stupa after the defeat of the South Indian King who once governed Anuradhpura. Within the vicinity are also four stone statues highlighting the brilliant craftsmanship of that era.
