Moomintroll is supposed to take a jug of milk home to Moominmamma. It shouldn’t be that difficult. But along the way, he comes across a crying Mymble: her little sister, Little My, has run away. And things aren’t quite so simple after that.

The show is based on Tove Jansson’s 1952 picture book, with its die-cut holes that let you peek through to the next page. Junibacken first staged it in 2015, when the Moomins celebrated their 70th anniversary, and it became one of the venue’s biggest hits. Mikael Kallin is back in the director’s chair, just as he was then.

What’s new is the setting. The show takes place right in the middle of Winter in Moominvalley, where the audience settles down on a snowy ridge. The production is the big autumn highlight of Junibacken’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Kallin describes it as a story about “the comical and human side of being a troll on a little walk past everything that gets in the way”.

Theatre tickets must be booked separately online, and an admission ticket or annual pass is also required. Friday’s two premiere performances are already fully booked, so it pays to plan ahead.

The show lasts 20 minutes, making it perfect for a three-year-old, and roughly the amount of time Moomintroll should have needed to get home.

What Happens Next?, Junibacken, Galärvarvsvägen 8, Djurgården. Premiere on Friday, October 16. 20 minutes, ages 3 and up. Admission from 160 kronor; theatre tickets must be booked separately at junibacken.se
