It started with second-hand containers at Skanstull in 2022. Sweden’s first container park, built from sheet metal that others had got rid of, with burgers, DJs and a sun deck. Two summers later, the crew moved on to Marievik, down by the water next to Liljeholmsbron. A neighbourhood that even die-hard Södermalm residents could barely point out on a map.
”The waterfront location is unbeatable, Marievik has the potential to become Stockholm’s best summer hangout”, said Peter Schröder, Plåtparken’s programme director, at the time. It turned out he was right. Two years later, the area has gained a gigantic waterfront swimming area, three saunas, a basketball court, food markets and enough life to make the office district start to resemble a neighbourhood.
After last summer came the news that it was all over: the site was to become a municipal park. Then things changed, and Plåtparken opened anyway on May 8 this year. One year on borrowed time, then. But now it really is over.
On Saturday, September 5, they will say goodbye to the waterfront. Entry is free, children and dogs are welcome, and the programme is packed.
DJ Joanna Party and Jenny Seth kick things off at 17:00, Dekula Band bring the groove from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, at 19:00, DJ Susia takes over at 20:30 and Video Kid live-mixes danceable music videos from around the world from 21:30.
Pompette and Supermercado will also be selling wine and snacks, Josefin Hinders is responsible for art and light installations, and the saunas are open and free. If you arrive early, you can catch the Dockside Swim & Gravel race on the waterfront from 15:00.
Plåtparken is located at Marieviksgatan 13 and will remain open for another week after the party. Next spring, they hope to pop up somewhere else.
