Söderhallarna has been both praised and mocked since opening in 1992. Bo Kjessels postmodern colossus by Medborgarplatsen is now blue-listed by the Stockholm City Museum, meaning it has been placed in the highest category of cultural heritage value. Whatever you make of the birch panelling. Since the end of 2023, the food hall has been closed – but on 23 October, it reopens.
The reopening will happen in stages, with the food hall and most of its current tenants first up. Köttkompaniet, which dry-ages its own meat and has been around since 1988, is making the move to Söder. Joining them are Sjömatbaren, cheese specialist Affinage and Pärlans Konfektyr.
On the restaurant side, Sin Ramen, Asian bistro Zazha and Kajsas Fisk will open, alongside a yet-to-be-named concept from 20-Gruppen, the team behind Tjoget, G.A.T. and Liebling. There will also be Bouillon, a bistro based on the 19th-century French idea of serving affordable food in an elaborate setting.
Later this autumn comes Gränd, a beer concept featuring nine operators set to fill the passage between the food hall and Björkhallen with, presumably, craft beer. After that, even more places will open gradually throughout autumn and into 2027, including Systembolaget, a craft bakery, a bagel concept and Filmstaden.
Söderhallarna is located by Medborgarplatsen. The food hall opens on Friday 23 October.
