After three years of renovation, Söderhallarna reopens this Friday, October 23. Here’s your first sneak peek

Three years behind hoardings is a long time, even for a building that many Södermalm locals have had a complicated relationship with. Now the wait is over: Söderhallarna reopens on Friday, October 23. The red pillars, skylights and playful postmodernism have all been preserved, and the building has now been given blue status by the Stockholm City Museum, recognising its high cultural and historical value.
The new addition is the art. Södermalm-based artist Joakim Ojanen has created three sculptures for the building. The largest of his fairy-like figures stands almost four metres tall and is made of bronze, positioned by the entrance facing Medborgarplatsen.
Most of the market hall’s traders have opened from day one, including Köttkompaniet, Sjömatbaren and Affinage. For food and drink, you can choose between SIN Ramen, Kajsas Fisk, Bouillon, Zazha and Kafé Søder. Systembolaget is already in place, while Filmstaden will move in later.
Not everything is ready just yet, though. Beer hall Gränd is due to open towards the end of the year, with a bakery and a bagel shop set to follow in 2027.
Söderhallarna is located at Medborgarplatsen 3 on Södermalm and reopens on Friday, October 23. More businesses will open in stages.
