There's little question that Tokyo's public transportation network is, well, the best in the world. But learning how to navigate the capital's dozens of subway and train lines, hundreds of bus routes and handful of tram services can take years – hell, it could take a lifetime.

Always happy to help out where we can, we've now teamed up with Toei Transportation, the city-run public transport company, to bring you a handy but rather comprehensive guide to Tokyo's green Toei buses, the four Toei subway lines, the Toden Arakawa tram and the Nippori-Toneri Liner.

The Insider's Guide to Tokyo, available from August 3 in four languages (English, Japanese, Korean and Traditional Chinese), contains everything you need to plot your way through Tokyo on city-run public transport, plus five model routes for discovering hidden city gems from futuristic Odaiba up to nostalgic northern Tokyo.

Dumbo Doughnuts and Coffee

For example, the 'Traditional Tokyo' route takes you from Ueno Park to the izakayas of Kameido via the likes of Nezu Shrine and the Hokusai Sabo coffeeshop, while 'A Hipster's Tour of Tokyo' sees you explore the trendy streets of Harajuku, Aoyama and Azabu-Juban.

We've also included a quick Q&A on the Toei network, revealing things like where all of Tokyo's buses go at night and what happens to old carriages once they're retired. For all this and much more, pick up your free copy of The Insider's Guide to Tokyo now at any major Toei subway station, the Shibuya Station Tourist Information Centre or our own Time Out Café & Diner in Ebisu. Happy travels!
