Japan’s current state of emergency, which only affects the Greater Tokyo region, is set to expire this Sunday March 7. Go to Travel, however, will still be on hold even after the state of emergency is lifted. The domestic tourism subsidy was initially suspended nationwide on December 28 to curb the spread of Covid-19 over the New Year holidays.
The Japan Times reports that while the government is looking to restart the Go to Travel programme sometime in March in areas where infections are under control, this may not happen until thorough preventative measures can be introduced. Furthermore, each region's Covid-19 situation will also have to be taken into consideration.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking to travel after the state of emergency is lifted, JR East has made two rail passes available to foreign residents in Tokyo. These money-saving train deals, previously offered only to tourists, will be available from April 1.
