The spread of Covid-19 coronavirus has caused Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to declare a state of emergency for the whole country. Previously declared on April 7 in only seven prefectures, including Tokyo and Osaka, the declaration was extended nationwide after a rampant spread of cases throughout the country. The state of emergency will end on May 6, which is the end of Golden Week, Japan’s longest holiday period. Golden Week starts with a single holiday on April 29 and continues from May 3 to May 6.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the spread of coronavirus cases is slowing down, despite the declaration. At the time of writing, Japan recorded 10,965 coronavirus cases (excluding those from charter flights and cruise ships).

According to The Japan Times, the government is waiting for an extra budget to pass before deciding on a possible extension. The budget will help fund measures to support the economy during a longer state of emergency.

As The Japan Times reported: ‘“The budget will probably pass on April 30 or May 1,” a ruling party source said. “If possible, it’s better to decide on an extension at the same time.”’ The potential state of emergency extension will also be discussed with experts before May 6.

So for the time being, let’s just sit tight, stay home as much as possible and, if we must venture outside, practise social distancing and wash our hands often.
