The massive Starbucks Reserve Roastery Tokyo is not like any other Starbucks you’ll visit. On top of its seasonal store merchandise, freshly roasted coffee and fancy cocktail bar, the venue is also home to a dedicated tea room, serving up unique tea concoctions you won’t find at your average Starbucks cafés.

Known as the Teavana tea room, the roastery’s second floor is dedicated to all things tea. What’s more, 2021 is the 15th anniversary of Starbucks Japan introducing matcha on its menu. To commemorate the occasion, Tokyo’s Reserve Roastery has created a lineup of special drinks made with stone-ground matcha.

Before machines were used to grind green tea leaves into matcha powder, the traditional way to make it was by using stone mills to hand grind the leaves. Now you'll be able to sample this special stone-ground matcha in three exclusive new drinks.

The first drink is a hot matcha latte (¥900), which is sweetened with wasanbon, Japanese cane sugar produced on Shikoku island. The vibrant green latte is also served in a gorgeous traditional matcha bowl rather than your typical cup.

The matcha latte also comes in an iced version (¥900), if you'd prefer something more refreshing.

Lastly, the stone-ground matcha Fredo (¥1,000) is a frozen take on this special drink and is made with milk, ice cream and wasanbon. Both the cold drinks are available for takeaway, but you’ll have to sit in if you want to sample the hot matcha latte.

All three drinks are now available exclusively at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery Tokyo. Just head on up to the second floor to experience matcha the more traditional way.
