With shortened dinner service hours during the Covid-19 pandemic, these restaurants now offer exclusive morning deals instead

Throughout the pandemic in Tokyo, restaurants have regularly been asked to shorten their usually late hours, closing at 9pm or even 8pm, depending on the local Covid-19 restrictions. Without being able to serve dinner and drinks late into the night, some venues have had to get creative, shifting their hours to open earlier, offering new – sometimes unexpected – breakfast options instead.

Now early risers and business people in Tokyo looking for a decent sit-down morning meal can choose from all-you-can-eat bread buffets, tacos, yakiniku (yes, really) and even Michelin-starred French cuisine. Ditch the convenience store and head over to one of these restaurants instead.

At Yoyogi-Uehara’s famed Michelin-starred French restaurant Sio, you can enjoy the signature Japanese-French dinner tasting menu for breakfast under the name morning ‘dinner’. Chef Shusaku Toba serves seven to eight omakase courses, featuring his favourite dishes including a fluffy soufflé omelette, horse meat tartare, plus a side of freshly cooked rice and miso soup for ¥6,000

And instead of the usual wine pairing, there’s a tea pairing with a range of creative brews like sparkling tea, green tea and Chinese pu’er tea with a hint of cacao vinegar. You can make reservations for 8.30am, 9am or 9.30am online and we highly recommend booking in advance because places are limited.
