May in Japan is always packed with unmissable festivals, spring flowers and exhibitions, beginning with the latter half of the Golden Week holiday and continuing through the month. As the weather starts to warm up, May is also the perfect time for eating and drinking out in the open.

Our top picks for the month across the country range from a conceptual café serving spring-themed sweets in one of Tokyo’s most stylish neighbourhoods to a much-anticipated exhibition bringing together three heavyweights of Osaka’s contemporary art scene.

Also on offer: experimental music in unexpected spaces throughout Kyoto, overnight stays in a former prison in Nara and a permanent stage show bringing the world of an iconic superhero franchise to life.

Weaving together Paris and Tokyo, Dior’s stunning Bamboo Pavilion store in Daikanyama encompasses a conceptual garden and this café by French star chef Anne-Sophie Pic. A highlight treat is the Le Trèfle pastry, an edible version of the maison’s signature four-leaf clover motif, adorned with a ladybug-shaped piece of chocolate to celebrate spring. Pic’s refined sweets are also available at the Dior Ginza store.

This experimental music festival, held until May 17, invites a diverse cast of artists from Japan and abroad to perform at standout venues such as the Shoseien Garden at Higashi-Honganji Temple. Sharing a theme with its sister event, the concurrent Kyotographie photography festival, Kyotophonie makes an ideal opportunity to expand your musical horizons.
