Tokyo has its fair share of world-class museums and galleries, but much of the city’s most intriguing art isn’t confined to any established institution. You can find it on street corners, in late-night bars and across liminal waterfront lots – if you know where to look.
This autumn is as good a time as any to connect with Tokyo’s artistic pulse, and we’re helping you do just that with the sixth issue of Time Out Japan. Available nationwide from October 30, the mag highlights all that’s hot in the capital’s art scene right now, from a sprawling international exhibition on the waterfront to a former capsule hotel turned into a pop-up art club.
Tokyo itself becomes both subject and stage during the run of Tokyo Atlas, a showcase of site-specific works by more than 20 artists across the capital’s waterfront until December 20. To go with the limited-time displays, we’ve rounded up some of the best public art you can see year-round in Tokyo.
We’ve also picked our favourites out of the stacked line-up of manga and anime shows on view in Tokyo in November and December, plus put together a guide to personal style in the city – an art form in its own right.
Beyond the capital, we’re bringing you 10 unmissable things to do across the country this season, along with a walking guide to the calmer side of Karuizawa and a peek at the coolest neighbourhood in Japan right now (hint: it’s in Osaka).
From October 30, pick up your FREE copy of Time Out Japan magazine in English at Haneda and Narita airports, Time Out Market Osaka, as well as selected hotels, tourist information centres, restaurants, cafés and shops across Japan. (See here for a more detailed list of distribution points.)
A digital edition will also be made available.
