The skies, the fountains, every region near
Seem’d all one musical cry; I never heard
So musical a discord, such sweet thunder. – A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Shakespeare’s plays and poems have inspired more music than any other English-language author. This fabulous concert samples this rich bounty through musical settings by superlative composers such as Tippett, Finzi, Gounod, Barber, Verdi, Britten and many more. An ensemble of outstanding young singers from across the country channels every facet of the music and texts. This is part of a week-long celebration of Shakespeare and Music involving the noted Shakespeare scholars Professor Paul Yachnin from McGill University and Professor Emeritus Linda Hutcheon from the University of Toronto.

If music be the food of love, play on;
Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken, and so die. – Twelfth Night
