"Adam Rudolph has been working towards a truly universal sound for 30 years."- Eye Weekly

"World jazz of the highest caliber." - Boston Globe

Over the years, we’ve hosted a wide variety of artists-in-residence, such as David Lang, Amelia Cuni, and Allison Cameron. This tradition continues with the visit of master percussionist and conductor Adam Rudolph, who will work with some of Toronto’s finest improvisers to create a concert program based on his concept of the “Organic Orchestra” original music notation and conducting system.

Adam has been hailed as “a pioneer in world music” by the New York Times, and this problematic term actually makes sense when it comes to his work. His music and theory sits somewhere between improvisation, composition, dissonance and consonance informed by decades of study and experience with a variety of musical systems from around the world. This has resulted in 25 recordings featuring his compositions and percussion work. His most recent release is Turning Towards The Light on Cuneiform Records.

Rudolph’s key mentors were trumpet icon Don Cherry (with whom he lived and studied) and foundational “Eastern sound” saxophonist Yusef Lateef, with whom he recorded 15 albums. Other major associations include Foday Musa Suso and Hamid Drake, (co-founders of the Mandingo Griot Society). As a teacher he has worked with hundreds of musicians in Sicily, Oslo, Istanbul, New York, Los Angeles and beyond.

He truly brings a wealth of playing and compositional experience to interface with members of the Association of Improvising Musicians in Toronto, the umbrella organization for a huge diversity of this city’s creative musicians), for several days leading up to this concert. Rudolph will conduct the ensemble through two sets of music.

Join us at 7:15PM for a pre-concert talk between Rudolph and AIMToronto’s Nilan Perera.
