THE CANADIAN DEBUT of Thrill Jockey recording artist COLLEEN!

Colleen is the alias of French musician Cécile Schott, who over the course of five albums on The Leaf Label, Second Language and Thrill Jockey, has consistently reinvented herself by taking acoustic instruments out of their usual context and pushing the boundaries of their playability, with compositions ranging from the mysterious and contemplative to kinetic and playful. Her fifth album Captain of None, released on Thrill Jockey in 2015, is the most melodic in her repertoire, with fast-paced tracks rooted by prominent bass lines and her instruments of choice, the treble viola da gamba and her voice. It features delicately crafted, other-worldly pop songs incorporating dub-inspired techniques.

Commanding influences as varied as gypsy field recordings, Greek rembetika, Russian folksongs, Faces, and Black Sabbath, Toronto's Picastro craft starkly discordant soundscapes where murmured vocals cascade alongside a rich panorama of dissonance and string-laden dynamics.
Picastro has played a number of festivals including SXSW (Austin), CMJ (NYC), Incubate (Netherlands), Rhaaa Lovely (Belgium), Žedno Uho (Croatia), Tanned Tin (Spain), Suoni Per il Popolo (Montreal) and NXNE (Toronto). The band has toured or played shows with Scout Niblett, Nadja, Cerberus Shoal, Xiu Xiu, Devendra Banhart, Marissa Nadler, Dwayne Sodahberk, Broken Social Scene and many other wonderful artists.

Justin Small is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist who lives in Toronto. Small is well-known for playing in bands like Lullabye Arkestra and he’s won awards for his film scoring work with Ohad Benchetrit. The two also play together in the critically acclaimed and mostly instrumental band Do Make Say Think, one of the most influential post-rock ensembles to ever call Toronto home. Something about the freedom of DMST is apparent in Small’s ambitious new song subscription series, in which he is writing and uploading a new song every single week.
