About Rulan Tangen

Rulan Tangen’s dance journey centers around the founding of DANCING EARTH CREATIONS, nurturing a new generation of Indigenous contemporary dancers to bring ecologically-themed danceworks to 15 states and 6 countries as artists, teachers and cultural ambassadors. Surviving cancer to discover her leadership purpose, she believes in dance as functional ritual for transformation and healing, embodiment of ancestral and futurist worldviews, and expression of animistic energetic connection with all forms of life on earth. Her vision is recognized through honors including the first dance fellowship for Artistic Innovation by the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation, the Costo Medal from UC Riverside’s Chair of Native Affairs, and Dance Magazine’s pick as one of “25 To Watch”. www.dancingearth.org

Class - DANCING EARTH Indigenous Contemporary Dance:

Rulan welcomes the community of dancers and movers to join the circle for a rigorous contemporary dance class. Rooted in Indigenous imagery, together we will activate the body’s potential for accessing memory, instinct, intuition, imagination, awareness, feeling and relationship with spirit and the world around. The warmup is in continuous motion, growing through levels from ground to sky, emphasizing qualities of elements such as air (breath), water (flow), and earth ( rootedness ). With impetus from spine and torso, we will explore the undercurrents of circles inherent in movement, and move through space with migratory steps. Group dynamic is built by shared rhythms, with diversity of individual interpretation encouraged to serve the ecology of the whole. Session will culminate in phrases drawn from decades of exploration of an evolving language of Indigenous contemporary dance. Organic, dynamic, grounded, breathing dance – “ To live is to dance, to dance is to live !”
