DAILY AFFIRMATIONS

March 31 - April 30, 2017

"I deserve good things, I am entitled to my share of happiness. I refuse to beat myself up. I am an attractive person. I am fun to be with."
-Stuart Smalley
-a fictional character invented and performed by comedian and satirist (and later United States Senator from Minnesota) Al Franken. The character originated on the television show Saturday Night Live, in a mock self-help show called "Daily Affirmation With Stuart Smalley."

PAUL GAGNER:
My paintings reflect and feed on common anxieties associated with artists. “How will people respond? Is this too didactic? Is this good? Am I being delusional? Is this a bunch of bullshit?”

DANIELLE ORCHARD:
I see moments of vulnerability as opportunities for finding humorand empathy, bringing together disparate painting languages and art historical influences to create a world that is at once composited and unified, populated by a recurring cast of characters that are proxies for myself.
The aspect of humanity I want to approach in my work is at once tender and funny, violent and calm, graceful and clumsy. Languor and the anxiety of inaction exemplify the tension that exists between anticipated and actual experience, tension that I hope to capture in my work.
