Please join us at The Theatre Centre for a discussion featuring artists Deanna Bowen and Abbas Akhavan, facilitated by Joshua Vettivelu. DAMNED IF YOU DO: A Conversation on the Politics of Refusal aims to investigate the often tricky negotiations 'marginalized' artists must make when navigating neoliberal art and funding systems; where inclusion is often based on a mandated disclosure/performance of identity politics.

These two engaging artists will present a dynamic conversation about the ways in which they have maneuvered different socio-political art spaces, with thoughts specifically geared towards the position of artists who are early on in their careers and just starting to engage with some of these questions.

We are very excited to be hosting Abbas and Deanna at a fully accessible venue and hope you can come and participate in this discussion. If you cannot attend, we would appreciate it if you could share within your networks.

The framework for this conversation was generated through Whippersnapper's current group of PEERS:

Brian Joe
Maandeeq Mohamed (Maa Ndeeq)
Zinnia Naqvi
Rekha Ramachandran
Sean Sandusky

PEERS is an experimental residency program which leverages collectively-accumulated knowledge to support emerging artists in developing the skills and relationships needed to their practices and to postively impact the communities in which they exist.

Special thanks to our co-presenters The Theatre Centre for their generous support.

This event is FREE and open to the public. The Theatre Centre is a fully accessible venue. Please contact us at general@whippersnapper.ca if you have specific accessibility needs.
