I Am The Blues
2015 166min.
Directed by Daniel Cross

I AM THE BLUES is a musical journey through the swamps of the Louisiana Bayou, the juke joints of the Mississippi Delta and Moonshine soaked BBQs in the North Mississippi Hill Country. Watching the film is like going back in time: to the stoops, to the broken chairs lining awnings, to the churches and community halls where this music still lives. The film is part music lesson, part oral history, and it will make you want to sing along.

The film asks the question, who is the next generation of Blues musicians? Young people float on and off the screen, but none seem interested in this music.

Well, we found one: James Dunbar, age 12. He will play a live set at the Revue before the film plays and then again after while people are milling about.

James starting gigging by the age of 8, starting at his local Loblaw’s store where he just sat down and started playing. Now, at the age of 12, James’ has played a combo of jazz standards and original compositions in venues throughout Toronto and southern Ontario. Included a residency at the prestigious Jazz Bistro (at the site of the former Senator), regular gigs at the 120 Diner, performance at the 2016 Youth Day Festival, guest appearances with the Honey Runners and Samantha Martin. James’ talent has been recognized at the 2016 TD Niagara Jazz Festival where he was the winner of the “Jazz for the Ages” youth category, and the nation wide 2015 Kelloggs Nominate Talent Contest.
