RACHEL MONOSOV
Pastoral
15 July – 27 August
Opening reception: Friday July 15, 6-8pm

“While nature may seem to exist in its own right, unquestionable and omnipresent, the planting of a tree can come from political interest; a calculated action by men with an agenda. We live in a world where we cultivate the most useful plants while turning entire rainforests into lumber; in a place where forests are planted to possess land. There is an urgent need to examine the seed, the core, the soil we walk on, and the water we drink… We live in a time and place where even microscopic examination will not reveal the difference between a real seed and its imitation.”
- Rachel Monosov

AC Repair Co. is pleased to present works by Rachel Monosov in her first solo exhibition in Canada. The gallery will present a selection of works from an exhibition that took place at Barbé Gallery, Ghent in 2015, featuring video and photography. Monosov, who was born in Russia, grew up in Israel since the age of five and went on to study art in Israel, New York, and Belgium. Monosov is now based in Brussels, Belgium. Her personal experience of crossing borders has lead to a practice that explores themes such as cultural notions of alienation and territorial belonging. For the central piece of the exhibition titled “Freedom in the Clouds” (2015), Monosov shot footage in Germany, in the vacation resort Tropical Islands, a human-made simulation of a natural Thai island, confined underneath a giant dome of the former Brand-Briesen Airfield in Krausnick, Germany. The second location in the work is a botanical garden in Jerusalem, Israel. As the character performs in the film, their acts and environment alter between the real and the surreal, the natural and the synthetic, and the past and the future. Monosov’s work, although diverse in medium, has the common goal of revealing the absurdity of how long-standing nationalistic and religious identities have no place in a globalized world that has the potential to become borderless.

Monosov (b. Saint Petersburg, Russia 1987) received her BFA in Photography from the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, Israel in 2010, and her MFA from The Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent (KASK), Belgium in 2014. Although young, Monosov has mounted exhibitions around the world in Peru, Berlin, New York, Zimbabwe and Brussels. Her work has been acquired by collections around the world, most notably the Tiroche DeLeon collection in Tel Aviv. She has several upcoming residencies including Catinca Tabacaru Residency this August in Newfoundland, Canada; the Villa Lena residency Fall 2016 in Tuscany, Italy; and the Triangle residency Spring 2017 in Brooklyn, New York. Monosov is represented by Catinca Tabacaru Gallery in New York.
