Queer & Trans Youth Arts Programs: Through The Lens (For 13 15 Year Olds) says
Through the Lens creatively uses photography to explore body image and its connections to gender, sexuality and identity. The program will provide queer, trans and gender independent kids, as well as kids of queer and trans families, the opportunity to develop skills in photography and provide a platform for participants to share their unique lived experience and relationship to their bodies. We will create a safe, inclusive and accessible space for youth to share their stories, by establishing a collaborative safe space agreement, recognizing and respecting each participant’s accessibility needs, and celebrating each participant’s unique identity. Through arts-based activities, including photography, forum theatre and creative writing, participants will explore the complexity and beauty of their relationship to their body as it relates to gender, sexuality and other parts of their identity. We will challenge harmful social norms and oppressive societal structures that limit our self-expression, and recognize the struggles, resiliencies and unique connection each person has to their body. Participants will also gain skills in DSLR photography and visual storytelling, and have the opportunity to take innovative photos that represent their experiences. The program will culminate with their photos and stories exhibited in a digital photo-book, on Through the Lens of Our Bodies’ website, as well as at an exhibition at The 519. The program was first inspired by and is run in collaboration with Through the Lens of Our Bodies (http://lensofourbodies.com/).
