"'12 Monkeys' is fierce and disturbing, with a plot that skillfully resists following any familiar course. The film's hero fears that he's half-crazy, and for two hours Mr. Gilliam artfully keeps his audience feeling the same way." -Janet Maslin, The New York Times Join us for our monthly sci-fi/fantasy series, Robots vs. Unicorns!

Our pre-show entertainment starts at 7:00pm and the feature starts at 8:00pm.

Terry Gilliam's gritty sci-fi classic is coming back to the big screen this month at The Royal! After a man-made virus destroys most of the Earth's population in 1996, the remaining survivors are forced to move underground and rebuild society. In the year 2027, James Cole (Bruce Willis) is a prisoner who is sent back in time to gather information on the virus, in order to help discover a cure and save humankind.

Although Gilliam often writes and directs his features, he was captivated by David Webb Peoples' script, stating that "The story is disconcerting. It deals with time, madness and a perception of what the world is or isn't. It is a study of madness and dreams, of death and re-birth, set in a world coming apart." This skewed non-linear thrill-ride is perfectly rendered through Gilliam's visionary eye, and with its profound depth in symbolism and themes, it is an easy film to re-watch again and again.
