SHAME SHAME

Shame Shame is a visual artist collaboration featuring new works by Maria Qamar (@hatecopy) and Babneet Lakhesar (@babbuthepainter). Produced by South Asian bridal brand CTC West (@ctcwest), the show explores the shame that first and second generation youth of the South Asian diaspora encounter when they realize that they want to partake in the arts. Whether the dream is to create, critique or simply experience, this demographic is often confronted by a wagging finger, 'shame shame'.

Artist Statements:

@babbuthepainter
Indo-Canadian artist, Babneet Lakhesar created the persona of Babbu The Painter as a means of expression and critique. Her artwork is a journey of self-discovery and introspection. Babbu’s paintings directly respond to her surrounding environment and are further inspired by the people around her. Her work explores the idea of first generation Indians pushing the boundaries within their societal norms, through means of expression such as body adornment, fashion, and their significant other.

@hatecopy
Hatecopy's Instagram account is fast becoming a bookmark for young people from South Asian backgrounds. Her pop art often references Desi Diaspora culture, leverages the dramatic, hyperbolic, maternal and feisty women from Desi soap operas, also known as "aunties" to deliver her message.
