Special Guest Ariel Balevi & Sheniz Janmohamed
Musicians: Ernie Tollar (nay/bansuri) & Ravi Naimpally (tabla)

In the last installation of the Spoken Word Series, Sheniz Janmohamed & Special Guest Ariel Balevi honour the words and life of Mewlana Jalaluddin Rumi. Balevi will unravel Rumi's tales and Janmohamed will illuminate each parable with poetry. Witness the magic that happens when they are accompanied by world class musicians Ernie Tollar (nay/bansuri) & Ravi Naimpally (tabla).

Open Mic: After the formal component of the evening, audience members will have an opportunity to sign up to participate in the open mic (read a poem, tell a story, sing a song!)

Sign-up for the open mic begins at 7pm at the entrance of the Bellerive Room. Be there early! Limited spaces available.

Ariel Balevi (Storyteller):

Ariel Balevi is a storyteller whose repertoire derives from the literary and folklore traditions of Iran, Turkey, and Central Asia, including Firdowsi’s Book of Kings (Shahnameh), Attar’s Conference of the Birds (Manteq o Tayir), Nizami’s Seven Pavilions of Love (Haft Paykar), and Rumi’s Masnavi. Ariel performs these stories in English, using verse or proverb from the language of origin of the story. In his performances Ariel strives to present the universality of these narratives, unfamiliar to some audiences, and in doing so bring about mutual respect and understanding among different cultures and traditions.

Sheniz Janmohamed (Spoken Word Series Curator/Poet):

Sheniz Janmohamed is an author, artist educator and spoken word artist. She has performed nationally and internationally for over 10 years and has been featured at various venues including the Jaipur Literature Festival and the TedXYouth Conference. She is also the author of two collections of poetry: Bleeding Light (Mawenzi House, 2010) and Firesmoke (Mawenzi House, 2014). Sheniz facilitates creative writing workshops and retreats for writers of all ages and is currently completing her Arts Education certification at The Royal Conservatory in Toronto. www.shenizjanmohamed.com
