WILD WEST WEDNESDAYS are here at the Carlton where every Wednesday in April, we'll be screening a classic Western on the BIG SCREEN with matinee shows at 12:30 PM and evening shows at 9:00 PM! And there’s no way you can have a Western retrospective without the one and only Sergio Corbucci and his masterfully bleak Spaghetti classic, THE GREAT SILENCE!

A mute gunfighter defends a young widow and a group of outlaws against a gang of bounty killers in the winter of 1898, and a grim, tense struggle unfolds.

Let's talk about Sergio Corbucci, shall we? In the grand pantheon of great Spaghetti Western filmmakers, Sergio Leone, in many peoples' eyes, stands alone. However, there's a very good argument to be made that Sergio Corbucci deserves just as high a spot, if not, equal billing, as one of the all-time greats. While you may not be familiar with his name, you're certainly familiar with DJANGO, the film that spawned over 50 unofficial sequels (including Quentin Tarantino's DJANGO UNCHAINED) and took the Spaghetti Western genre in a darker, grittier direction than even the great Leone himself couldn't have possibly imagined. In addition to DJANGO, Corbucci's other claim to fame is THE GREAT SILENCE, and a great film, this certainly is.

Set in the snowy landscape of Utah (a first for the genre), THE GREAT SILENCE is one of the most violent and unbelievably bleak Westerns you will ever see. Featuring masterful performances from the likes of the legendary Klaus Kinski and a stoic take on the Spaghetti Western anti-hero from Jean-Louis Trintignant, THE GREAT SILENCE in many respects laid the groundwork for films like Quentin Tarantino's THE HATEFUL EIGHT with its depiction of unbridled cruelty infused with humour as black as midnight on a moonless night.

THE GREAT SILENCE is definitely the "dark horse" in our WILD WEST WEDNESDAYS line-up but we sincerely hope you give this one a shot as we’re really thrilled to be showcasing this unsung classic on the BIG SCREEN where it belongs.

We're equally excited to welcome our official WILD WEST WEDNESDAY house band who will perform from 7:30pm-9pm: Geoff Marshall & The Mail Order Cowboys!
