We are delighted to invite you to a free, two-day, graduate student-run symposium entitled Verging: New Technologies/Practices/Aesthetics in Documentary. This symposium will bring together makers, scholars, and students to interrogate the new language of documentary, with a focus on new technologies, practices, pedagogies, and aesthetics.

We are extraordinarily pleased to announce that award-winning documentary media artist Jonathan Harris will give a Keynote Presentation on his recent work Network Effect ( at 3:30pm on March 18th (followed by a reception).

Harris is an acclaimed interactive artist and computer scientist, known for his work with data poetics and storytelling. The co-creator of We Feel Fine, the director of The Whale Hunt, I Love Your Work, among many others, Harris’s works have redefined documentary storytelling in the digital age. The winner of three Webby awards, his work has also been recognized by AIGA and Ars Electronica. Finally, Jonathan’s projects have been widely covered by The New York Times, CNN, BBC and NPR. TIME Magazine named his online storytelling library, Cowbird, one of the fifty best websites of 2012.

Friday March 18th will begin with a round table discussion including Virtual Reality producer Nyla Innuksuk, acclaimed documentary maker Gerry Flahive, and Isaac Rayment - virtual and augmented reality specialist of ShokCreative ( This will be followed by a multi-media presentation by Ralph Dfouni and Ghassan Fayad, of KNGFU, of their interactive work, Life on Hold (

On Saturday March 19th, we will host a series of graduate student presentations, followed by interactive/VR/new media workshops by Helios (, Occupied VR ( and KNGFU (
