With new host rules, you’re off the hook for washing dishes and stripping beds.

Vacations are meant for relaxation, sleeping in and slowing down—not frantically running three loads of laundry and scrubbing stovetops before an 10am checkout. While you might opt for a short-term rental over a traditional hotel to feel more at home while on vacation, you don't expect housework to come along with it. And that's just what Airbnb guests have experienced in recent years: a multi-page chore list despite a hefty cleaning fee tacked onto your travel charges.
Thanks to a wave of complaints, Airbnb is has finally made a big change in favor of guests. Starting November 20, the vacation rental platform is rolling out updated global guidelines designed to keep host requests reasonable, clear and chore-free.

Under the new policy, hosts can no longer ask guests to complete tasks that require significant effort or time. That means no more stripping the bed sheets, starting laundry loads, washing and putting away dishes, or hauling trash to off-site dumpsters. Hosts are also prohibited from restricting access to amenities promised in the listing or slapping guests with surprise fines—since AirCover already protects hosts against accidental damage.
So, what can hosts ask of you? Reasonable basics are still fair game. You might be asked to toss used dishes in the sink, gather your damp towels or sort recycling into designated indoor bins. Essentially, you are expected to be a courteous guest, not an unpaid professional cleaner.
To make things even smoother, Airbnb is standardizing seven core house rules—covering pets, smoking, quiet hours, events, commercial photography, guest limits and locking up at checkout. Crucially, all rules must be completely visible on the listing before you book. No secret post-booking rules allowed, though rare exceptions may apply for local emergencies, like drought-related limits to shower usage.
Ultimately, these updates restore a simple truth to travel: When you pay for a getaway, you deserve to actually get away from your housework.
