Only 25 theaters across the country are showing the film the way Christopher Nolan intended it to be seen

After much anticipation, Christopher Nolan’s epic adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek classic, The Odyssey, finally landed in theaters on July 17, and grossed a colossal $988 million worldwide in the weeks following that release. (That's a lot of butts in cinema seats.)
But while the film is captivating audiences nationwide, some cinephiles are clamoring to watch this blockbuster in a very specific, very rare format, available in very few theaters across the country. Here's everything you need to know about seeing The Odyssey in 70mm IMAX in the U.S.
In short, yes. Nolan shot The Odyssey entirely using high-resolution IMAX film cameras, capturing expansive vistas and intimate close-ups with unprecedented clarity. To experience the film exactly as he intended, fans are racing to secure tickets for IMAX 70mm screenings—an analog format that utilizes giant reels of film projected onto massive screens.
Because IMAX 70mm film is roughly ten times larger than standard 35mm film, it offers more detail and sharpness, plus expanded aspect ratio. This means you can see more of every shot, and watching Odysseus’s legendary journey is that much more immersive.

Because your average movie theater these days is probably not capable of projecting this format. As the industry shifted toward digital projection over the past two decades, the complex equipment and specialized projectionists needed for 70mm film fell by the wayside.
Today, only 25 theaters in the entire United States have the proper equipment to show The Odyssey in native IMAX 70mm (see our rundown below of a location closest to you). Demand has been so overwhelming that many showtimes sold out months in advance, making The Odyssey tickets some of the hardest to acquire in recent cinema history.
If you're fortunate enough to live near one of these 25 select venues, seeing The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm is an unmatched cinematic event worth seeking out. But if a 70mm theater is hours away, don't worry: Standard digital and standard IMAX presentations still offer stunning visuals alongside the phenomenal performances. You'll see the exact same movie—just with a slightly cropped frame. But for those who crave the ultimate, uncompressed visual spectacle, these 25 golden locations remain the ultimate way to watch history unfold on screen.
Thankfully, The Odyssey's IMAX theatrical run has been extended through September 16, 2026, which gives moviegoers an extra month of showtimes to catch the sweeping fantasy film in the fittingly epic format. Alas, though there are more showtimes, the list of theaters has not expanded, again because only 25 theaters in the United States have the technical capability to run such screenings.
