Burger King wants you to get to know your Whopper a little better

Why do you love a Whopper? Is it the meat? The bun? It’s definitely not all the processed, artificial junk it used to be made with. As of today, Burger King’s signature burger is losing all of its food coloring, fake flavors and unnatural preservatives—and it wants you to know.

The new and improved Whopper will bare it all on its limited-time wrapper printed with its full list of ingredients. It’s part of Burger King’s global movement to remove all artificial components from its permanent menu by 2021. So far, the company has succeeded in ensuring 85-percent of its offerings are made from real food ingredients with changes still in the works for the rest. If this makes you question what was in Burger King’s items before—as it should—we’d like to note that the brand has already removed 8,500 tons of artificial substances from its food globally. The equivalent of 17 million pounds of things like sweeteners, emulsifiers and additives have already been done away with. Let that sink in for a minute…

But things are better now! Whoppers sold in Europe were the first to go au naturale last year, which makes sense if you’ve ever had fast-food abroad. Theirs have always tasted better than ours, so it’s no surprise that they’d level up before we would. If you’re curious about what is in your Whopper now, all you’ll have to do is read the wrapper. It’s all printed there and it’s exactly what you expected to find all these years: flame-broiled beef, tomatoes, lettuce, mayo, ketchup, pickles and onions between a sesame seed bun. Cheese is optional, so you won’t find it listed, but it’s available to add to your Whopper if you so wish. Just don’t let the purists hear you when you do.
