Amtrak just unveiled a patriotic new Acela train covered in stars, stripes and “1776 National Champs” energy ahead of America’s 250th birthday.

If you thought Amtrak’s sleek new Acela trains couldn’t get any more dramatic, allow us to introduce the rail equivalent of showing up to the barbecue in a sequined American flag jacket.
Amtrak has officially unveiled its new “Freedom 250” Acela train, a red, white and blue-wrapped high-speed train celebrating America’s upcoming 250th birthday—and it is extremely committed to the bit.
The patriotic locomotive made its debut this week in Philadelphia after traveling from Washington, D.C., to 30th Street Station, carrying Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy and a group of elementary school students headed out on a Revolutionary War-themed field trip. (Along the way, they visited classic Philly landmarks like the Liberty Bell.)
Visually, the train has giant stars that stretch across the exterior along with sweeping red-and-blue graphics, a massive Statue of Liberty illustration and the somewhat unhinged-but-admittedly-funny slogan “1776 National Champs” splashed across the side. Another section of the wrap reads: “Delivered by President Donald J. Trump and Secretary Sean P. Duffy.”
According to Amtrak, applying the decals took roughly 150 man-hours. In a statement, Amtrak said the train is meant to “highlight the nation’s founding ideals while looking ahead to the future of transportation,” tying the wrap into the larger nationwide America 250 celebrations planned ahead of the country’s semiquincentennial next year.
And despite the vintage patriotism aesthetic, the actual train underneath is very much future-facing. The Freedom 250 Acela is part of Amtrak’s new NextGen Acela fleet, the company’s first major high-speed rail overhaul since the original Acela launched back in 2000. The upgraded trains come with faster Wi-Fi, individual power outlets, reading lights, improved food service and expanded seating capacity. Amtrak says the new fleet will ultimately increase seats by 27% per departure as additional trains enter service through 2027.
Amtrak has simultaneously launched a new Northeast Corridor travel website ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, since cities like New York, Philadelphia and Boston are expected to see massive visitor surges this summer. And if one stars-and-stripes train somehow isn’t enough for you, more are coming: Amtrak says it plans to roll out similar America-themed decals across 20 additional locomotives nationwide in the coming months.
