If you're anything like us, you've sought refuge from the chaos that was 2020 in the sweet deliciousness that is ice cream. Well, if you've got a surplus of the treat in your freezer, you might want to throw it out: the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just recalled more than 11,000 containers of ice cream from Weis Markets given they might be contaminated with "extraneous material, specifically metal filling equipment parts."
Clearly, 2021 isn't off the greatest start.

To be specific, the recall involves 10,869 48-oz. containers of Weis Quality Cookies and Cream Ice Cream plus 502 3-gallon bulk containers of Klein's Vanilla Dairy Ice cream. "There has been one report of a customer who discovered an intact piece of metal equipment in the Weis Quality Cookies and Cream Ice Cream," reads the official document. "There is concern of an additional piece of equipment present in the ice cream product(s) possibly presenting a choking hazard."
Although the cookies and cream ice cream has already been removed from shelves, it was sold at 197 Weis Markets' stores across Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. The targeted packages have a sell-by date of October 28, 2021, so be sure to check that if you've got some at home.
The semi good news is that the vanilla bulk package was actually never available for retail sale, so you don't have to worry about that one. It was, however, purchased by a single retail establishment in New York and it has already been removed from sale.
Two other ice cream products were packaged on the same day as the potentially hazardous ones (Klein's Cookies and Cream Dairy Bulk and Nelson's Graham Slam Bulk) but the company made it clear that those units were stored in a warehouse and never distributed, so feel free to enjoy any you might have in your freezer.
Obviously, if you do happen to have bought the possibly contaminated ice cream, head to a Weis Market near you to return the package for a full refund. Be careful!
