Flights to bucket-list destinations are eye-popping; a new study reveals the most expensive.

Flight costs remain a primary make-or-break factor for American vacationers. Nearly a third (30.26-percent) of U.S. travelers report that airfare dictates their final vacation choice. Yet, despite high prices, wanderlust is holding steady. Travelers fully expect to increase their travel budgets, with roughly a quarter actively spending more to secure premium, bucket-list experiences.
A study by travel insurance marketplace Squaremouth analyzed airfares from major departure points like New York and Los Angeles to identify the world's most expensive destinations to fly to from the U.S. by airfare. Long-haul and remote locations dominate the highest price tiers: Namibia came in at number one, with an average flight costing a whopping $2,009, beating even—wait for it—Antarctica itself. Yes, accessing the White Continent (via Ushuaia, Argentina) costs an average of $1,899 per flight. Zimbabwe, Botswana and Madagascar round out the top five highest international airfares for American travelers.
Sub-Saharan Africa features heavily among the most expensive air routes. While hubs like South Africa offer direct flights from the U.S., secondary destinations—including Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Tanzania, Zambia, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya—often require multiple layovers. These extra legs push total travel times up to 22–33 hours, driving up ticket prices.
Expensive airfare does not always equate to the most expensive trip overall, however. Destinations like Madagascar, Mongolia and Kenya feature high flight prices, but they don't rank among the study's top 15 most expensive overall destinations. Lower local expenses—such as affordable lodging, food and regional transport—frequently offset the initial airfare outlay once travelers arrive on the ground.
When accounting for total trip costs (incorporating accommodations, daily dining, car rentals and activities alongside airfare), the global hierarchy shifts. With all that said, the study reveals that the most expensive destinations overall are Greenland, British Virgin Islands, French Polynesia, Antarctica and Maldives.
