More community clubhouse than corporate nightclub, The Birdhouse is a queer- and trans-operated Mount Pleasant event space serving dance parties, drag, performance, art and beautifully organized chaos. Its calendar changes constantly, with different nights speaking to different corners of the queer community rather than forcing everyone beneath one enormous rainbow umbrella. Expect committed looks, enthusiastic dancing and a crowd that understands “express yourself” is an instruction, not a suggestion. Events are generally ticketed, so check the schedule instead of simply appearing at midnight and rattling the door.

Celebrities has the high ceilings, enormous dance floor and flashing-light firepower for nights when subtlety just ain’t it. The Davie Street landmark continues to host electronic acts, live performances and weekly parties, with programming ranging from hip-hop and R&B to dubstep, drum and bass, house and Pride blowouts. It remains one of Vancouver’s most unapologetically large-scale queer nightlife rooms, although the crowd and calendar travel well beyond a single label. Arrive ready to dance, queue and possibly lose sight of your friends in the melée.

When the sensible clubs close, Gorg-O-Mish is just stretching. This Granville Entertainment District after-hours institution opens from 2 am to 8 am on Saturday and Sunday mornings, concentrating primarily on house and techno. There is no bottle service, no VIP peacocking and no real reason to ask what time it is. The room exists for people who came to hear DJs rather than pose beside them, with an expressive, judgment-free dress policy and an admirable commitment to keeping the bass going until breakfast.

The Fox is for people who want a dance floor but would rather not audition for entry to it. Housed in a former cinema on Main Street, this independent venue bounces between emerging bands, comedy, themed parties and reliably joyous throwback nights. The long-running ’80s vs ’90s party remains a crowd-pleaser, bringing together people who remember dial-up internet and people who wish they did. The atmosphere is friendly, unpretentious and just scruffy enough to feel like home.

Directly beneath Celebrities, Village Studios is the moodier younger sibling who owns better headphones. The basement space was relaunched as an independent multidisciplinary venue in 2021 and now hosts club nights, creative events and rave-forward programming with a particular appetite for house and techno. It feels intimate without being tiny, underground without requiring directions whispered beside a dumpster. The building has been part of Vancouver entertainment history for more than a century; happily, the current parties are considerably less genteel than the ballroom dancing once held upstairs.

The Red Room’s sunken floor, powerful PK Sound system and clear stage sightlines suit everything from electronic producers and bass-heavy parties to Latin music and live acts. The venue has been part of Vancouver nightlife for decades, but the appeal is refreshingly straightforward: loud music, good lighting and somewhere to move without repeatedly colliding with a decorative sofa. Check the night’s genre before committing; the programming can pivot dramatically from one event to the next.

A Mount Pleasant fixture for more than 50 years, the Biltmore reopened as the Biltmore Cabaret in 2007 and continues to book local artists, touring acts and events spanning a broad chunk of the musical universe. It’s more live venue than conventional nightclub, but the right evening can deliver precisely the sweaty, low-ceilinged dance-floor experience you were seeking. Consult the calendar first: tonight could be indie rock, metal, comedy, a themed dance party or something considerably harder to explain.

Some clubs chase cool. The Roxy chases the moment when everyone in the room suddenly believes they are the lead singer. Open nightly, with later closing times on Fridays and Saturdays, this Granville Street veteran fills its calendar with local bands, tribute acts, themed entertainment and the kind of high-energy crowd that treats personal space as an outdated concept. It’s loud, enthusiastic and raucous. Bring friends who will dance to anything and accept that at some point you may find yourself yelling the chorus of a song you previously claimed to hate.

Mansion is Vancouver nightlife in maximum-gloss mode. Located inside the Paradox Hotel, the multi-level club occupies more than 9,000 square feet and goes hard on soaring ceilings, dramatic lighting, high-powered sound and the whole tables-and-bottles production. It’s open Friday and Saturday nights, with guest-list and table reservations available for anyone planning a birthday, celebration or strategic entrance. This is not where you wear the sneakers reserved for taking out the recycling. Lean in, dress up and behave as though your bank balance is tomorrow’s problem.

Operating since 1980, Numbers calls itself Vancouver’s oldest gay bar. Its multi-room layout feels charmingly resistant to nightclub minimalism: there’s a main dance floor with an elevated DJ booth, a subterranean nook called the Pit, an upstairs Loft and a patio that hosts summer drag shows. The result is a neighbourhood bar-cum-queer institution that’s friendlier and less theatrical than some of Davie Street’s larger venues.
