A progressive Indian restaurant from Bangkok takes the top spot

Work these restaurants into your itinerary the next time you travel to Asia. Fifty of the region's best have just been named at the annual Asia's 50 Best Restaurants awards, a prestigious ranking determined by a panel of 350 regional chefs, restaurateurs, food writers, and gourmets.
This year, Gaggan from Bangkok tops the list, the fifth time it's done so in the award's history. It's recognised for its progressive Indian cuisine and playful approach to fine dining – example: using emojis to represent courses and encouraging diners to lick their plates. Two Hong Kong establishments follow: The Chairman at No. 2 and Wing at No. 3, an improvement from their fourth and fifth spot placements last year.
Based on this list alone, Bangkok and Tokyo are indisputably the culinary capitals of Asia. Each has nine restaurants on the list, while Singapore and Hong Kong each secured seven spots. Seoul, which hosted the Asia's 50 Best Restaurants award ceremony, has four entries. It's also home to Eatanic Garden (No. 25), a nature-inspired mod-Korean restaurant at level 36 of Josun Palace that bagged the Highest New Entry Award.
Bangkok and Singapore rep Southeast Asia well, but don't sleep on Indonesia. Its capital city, Jakarta, secures one spot with August (No. 49) for its creative use of local ingredients in decidedly global-minded dishes. Locavore NXT from Bali also scored the Sustainable Restaurant Award for its predominantly locally-sourced, plant-based menu propped up by permaculture techniques and circular waste management.
