The closest major city to the canyon is Nyingchi, whose airport welcomes flights from Lhasa, Chengdu, and other Chinese cities. From Nyingchi, you’ll need to drive for a good few hours to reach the trekking trails and viewpoints that surround the canyon.
Can you hike the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon?
It is possible to hike some of the canyon, though most of it is extremely rugged and remote. Permits, tricky terrain and unpredictable weather can make it dangerous to hike solo, so your best option is to join an organised trek or guided tour. The canyon’s most popular viewpoint to take in the breathtaking views is Zhibai (also known as Zhibai Grand Canyon Observation Deck), which offers panoramic views of the river below, and the majestic Mount Namcha Barwa stretching into the sky. You’ll find this viewpoint near Pai Town, and you can access other great viewing points along the drive from Nyingchi.
Best times to visit the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon?
The best time to visit is between April and June, or between September and October – shoulder seasons when the weather is clear, giving full visibility of the mountains.
